Well, day three of the PDC World Grand Prix is in the books and around the halfway stage, we’ve had some great darts, some high scoring and some great finishing. In short, the darts has been great and it’s just nice that it’s back on our TV screens.

Mark Walsh is Raymond van Barneveld’s bogey, according to the Dutchman and I can’t say I blame him for thinking that. Walsh holds a 3-2 in the head-to-head stats and he is also coming into the game off a far superior first round performance. Both men had relatively easy passages into the second round, but Walsh averaged 14 points more than Barneveld and also scored the higher checkout of the two.
Basically, the 1/2 on offer for the Dutchman is shocking value from the bookies. While I certainly wouldn’t rule out a Barney win, the stats point to it being a lot closer than the bookies would have you believe. Of course, they’ll have a lot of casual money going on Barney, so they can offer almost any price they want. But Paddy Power are offering the standout price for Mark Walsh and we’re going to have a dabble simply because it’s far too big looking at the stats.

I do love Simon Whitlock. He’s brought something special to the PDC. At the Premier League Darts event I went to, his was smiling, chatting with the fans and had a real aura about him that you don’t get from certain darts players. And one of those darts players is, of course, Andy Hamilton. Hamilton is a PDC stalwart and put in a solid performance to sweep aside Dennis Priestley without too much drama. He put in a nice average, with only his finishing seeming to be a tiny problem. Whitlock, on the other hand, showed what he can do with his darts, taking out the highest possible finish on his way to routing Paul Nicholson.
Looking at the first round, you would think this would be closer than the bookies have it, but I don’t think it will be. Hamilton can score heavily, just as heavily as Whitlock, in fact, but his scoring isn’t as consistent as the Australian, neither is his doubling. Whitlock should win easily enough, but 3/10 doesn’t exactly fill me with joy. That being said, Whitlock’s high finish power should see a decent checkout being scored.

Well, the head-to-head between these two currently sits at 8-5 in favour of James Wade, but that’s a lot closer than you might have thought. Wade came through a relatively easy encounter in the first round against Mick McGowan, while Colin Osborne battled past Co Stompe (which, to be honest, I’m still upset about).
However, although the head-to-head is close, Wade has won the last three encounters, which have all been in the past month. Obsorne’s form has been shocking lately and I can’t see anything changing against the former champion, Wade. With Wade at ¼ the market agrees.
The 180s line is around 5.5-6.5, which is about spot on, as I reckon we should see about 5, although Wade is capable of banging them in in quick succession. However, both men didn’t impress with the checkouts in the first round, so maybe the highest checkout is the way to go. The line is situated nicely at 120.5, so we can go under.

Not the most glamorous way to end the night, but a great chance for either man to get to the quarter-finals. For both men, it will be some contrast in form, as they have struggled for form on television in 2010. That being said, if Wes Newton can produce the form he did in the first hand against Colin Lloyd, Bates will struggle to cope.
Around 8/15 for Newton seems fair considering the first round of matches and given their respective form over the past few years. However, both men failed to score a single 180 in 7 legs of darts in the first round. So, the line for total 180s is 4.5, which seems fair.
