A bit of a heartbreaking night for us. The Wes Newton Vs Barrie Bates match was a particular source of trauma. Still, a fair night and a decent tournament for us so far. Some great matches so far, filled with drama.
Tonight, perhaps the highlight of the week for us, with Phil Taylor facing the man many people thought would end up being his main challenger for PDC titles, Gary Anderson. The other three matches also have the potential to be special, with Adrian Lewis facing the bang in-form Wayne Jones, Raymond van Barneveld taking on Barrie Bates and the conqueror of Simon Whitlock, Andy Hamilton, facing James “The Machine” Wade.

A very interesting match here. We have one player, Wayne Jones, who is in a rich vein of form. On the other hand, we have Adrian Lewis, who seems to be in a huge slump this year and had to battle hard to get past Terry Jenkins, who isn’t exactly setting the darting world alight, either.
For some reason, Lewis is favourite here, even though Jones has a better tournament average, has had high checkouts in both of his matches (130 and 124) and has shown to be solid on the PDC tour this year. For me, Jones should be favourite and it’s only because Lewis is a big PDC name that he’s such a short price.

On paper, this should be a walkover for Raymond van Barneveld. He looked great against Mark Walsh, averaging 91.20 and firing in 4 180s. Barrie Bates put in a solid performance against Wes Newton, improving on his first round average by a few points and getting his first 180s of the tournament. However, he was slow to start and wasn’t scoring consistently enough to trouble Barney over the best of seven sets.
Barney will be looking to build on his slow 2010 and will be wanting to prove his doubters wrong by getting into the semi-finals with some ease. I can’t see past Barney, but neither can the bookies, naturally. However, both men haven’t impressed with their finishing so far and Barney’s double trouble was well documented during the Premier League season, so we’ll be looking for some value in the highest checkout market.
At the time of writing, there are no markets up for this, but the line should be generous, so if it’s around 130, take the under for two units. The best place to bet this should be Paddy Power

Oh, this could be the tightest match of the night. Andy Hamilton pulled of a slight shock, defeating Simon Whitlock 3-2 in a thriller. Seriously great darts from both men, with Hamilton edging it thanks to his consistency on the starting double. He loves that double 16. James Wade won quite comfortably against Colin Osborne, 3-1. However, he struggled a bit on his doubles and his 180 scoring, which is usually his strong point, has been missing. Three 180s in 24 legs of darts is really not good enough. Sure, the double format means 180 scoring might be slightly less, but one every 8 legs just doesn’t cut it. However, Andy Hamilton isn’t faring much better, with one maximum in every 7.5 legs.
This match really could go either way, but Hamilton has been playing unbelievably well this week and he could yet cause another slight upset. I don’t like using the word “upset”, because I do rate Andy Hamilton highly, but the fact is Wade leads the head-to-head 13-7, with his last victory over “The Hammer” at the start of September in the Champions League. But Hamilton got one over on Wade the last time they met on TV, with a 5-3 victory at the Grand Slam of Darts.
Again, the bookies don’t have their prices up at the moment, which is rather annoying, but you can bet Andy Hamilton at Betfair, where you’ll also get a free bet up to £25 when you sign up.

The match of the tournament? Oh, no doubt about that. People have been wanting to see Phil Taylor play Gary Anderson at every tournament ever since Anderson burst onto the scene in the BDO, then moved to the PDC. It’s not always been the case, as Anderson found life tough to start with in the PDC. However, he’s finding his feet now and is starting to go deeper and deeper into the majors, while putting in good showings on the floor.
So, what will the outcome be? Well, the head-to-head is 8-2 in favour of Taylor, with Anderson’s last win coming back in 2007, in the final of the World Darts Trophy. It doesn’t bode well for Anderson, does it? Not really, no, especially as Taylor has 10+ points over Anderson on the averages and doesn’t struggle as much with his checkouts as the Scotsman does. Can Anderson be the first person to take a set off Taylor? Well, I certainly hope so, just for the sake of the tournament. Can I see Anderson beating Taylor? After the year Taylor has had, no. The longer the format, the more it suits Taylor. Best of seven is ideal territory for Taylor to flex his muscles and start putting in a seriously high average. Yes, Anderson will push him closer than Andy Smith and Brendan Dolan did, but the outcome should still be the same. The bookies agree, with Taylor at 1/14.
However, Anderson is averaging a maximum just less than one every three legs. Taylor is doing one every four legs or so. The bookies has the market for most 180s very close and Anderson might just have the advantage here. Taylor does love his maximums, but he also loves his cover shots, which has to be taken into consideration. Taylor should outscore Anderson overall, but Anderson should be good for another 7 or 8 maximums, maybe more if he can snatch a set or two.

Also, the line for 180s is unbelievably low, by my reckoning, with the bookies thinking around 9-10, which is worryingly low. This should be smashed, maybe even by Anderson alone.

I have no doubt it will be a cracker and I honestly think we’ve got two amazing bets there, although it is frustrating not having the prices for two matches. You would have thought the bookies would have got their fingers out, but they’re took scared to lay prices before Betfair does it for them. Farcical, if I’m being honest. What happened to bookies being proper odds compilers?
