A terrible night last night, let’s be honest. We had the misfortunate of backing Robert Thornton, who seemed incapable of hitting double 20 if his life depended on it. We then had Tony O’Shea, who got off to a blistering start, leading 4-1, and then winning a grand total of 3 legs after that. Finally, Mervyn King had darts to beat James Wade, couldn’t hold his throw towards the end of the match and that put us at 15-15 for the tournament and we have a profit of –

We were a tad unlucky with King, but the other two, well, it wasn’t our day. Let’s get back on track with tonight’s Grand Slam of Darts tips.

Scott Waites vs Raymond van Barneveld:
Well, this is a case of two men with contrasting fortunes in the group stages. Waites looked imperious winning his group, dishing out a lesson in darts to Martin Phillips and Adrian Lewis on the way to the top of his group. Raymond van Barneveld, on the other hand, had to have beat Darryl Fitton to secure his place, after looking distinctly average against Colin Lloyd in his previous group match. The bookies price this close and they seem to be basing this on overall form, not tournament form. Waites is the underdog and we’ll have a nibble on him to win this, as the price is right.

Colin Lloyd vs Co Stompe:
The Colin Lloyd resurgence continues this week, going undefeated in his group games. Co Stompe got through after an astounding comeback against Martin Phillips, with an average of around 94-95. Lloyd has been playing some excellent darts, including that victory over Raymond van Barneveld, but I think Stompe showed an extra bit of class with some amazing checkouts, including taking out 132 with two bulls and then a huge 104 under pressure after Phillips missed double top for the match. It was amazing under pressure and that might see him through against Jaws and I think, again, the price is right for the underdog here.
Co Stompe to beat Colin Lloyd: 6/5 @
Recommend: 1.5 units @ 6/5.
Phil Taylor vs Ronnie Baxter:
So, will Phil Taylor be wearing his glasses? Probably not. That’s about the only question you need to ask about this game. I think Taylor has far too much for Baxter, who has impressed in patches, but looked average in others. It might be close for a bit, but Taylor has the tools to power away from Baxter when it comes down to it.
Recommend: No bet.
Ted Hankey vs Steve Beaton:
It’s a battle of the former BDO World Champions to finish the darts off tonight and it’s a match I can’t wait for. If Hankey plays like he did in the first few legs against Michael van Gerwen, Steve Beaton will punish him and there would be no going back. However, this match has the potential to go all the way, especially after Beaton really impressed against Paul Nicholson and he averaged 97.25 doing so. Hankey eventually averaged 92, after some shocking darts to start, so with a better start, his average would be close to that of Beaton. Hankey’s price ranges from 1/2 to 4/6, but it’s kind of short.
However, I think that both players might fancy a big checkout and they should have a lot of chances, so we’ll have a bet on the highest checkout, as I like the line for it and I know both players are capable of fireworks.
