Well, after a great day, Saturday and the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam of Darts saw a shocking turn of events. Not only did Phil Taylor get knocked out by Steve Beaton, we had a terrible day and we now stand at 17-21 for the tournament and we have a loss of –

Yes, a bit heartbreaking and Terry Jenkins’ loss was particularly gut wrenching. However, we’ve got the semi-finals to worry about and it’s an unexpected line up, with only one seed left in the competition and only one group winner standing, James Wade and Scott Waites respectively. Still, let’s get the semi-final tips going and I’ll be back later on in the day with a tip or two for the final.

James Wade vs Wayne Jones:
Best of 31 again and you would have to fancy James Wade to beat Wayne Jones, since their last meeting in a best of 31 format was at the World Matchplay, which Wade won 16-12. But Wade hasn’t been hitting the high notes yet and was somewhat lucky to get through against Terry Jenkins. The same could be said for Wayne Jones, as the only time he led his quarterfinal against Gary Anderson was after the final dart was thrown. However, that was what mattered and Jones will be out to prove a point in his hometown.
Both men averaged around 95 in their quarterfinal matches, but Wade’s 6 finished of 100+ were the difference in his match. Jones managed one finish over 100, so his average is very impressive considering this. Wade’s scoring wasn’t as powerful as Jones, so this match could come down to the doubling. The fact is, Wade has been unbelievably sick when it comes to double 10, while Jones has struggled.
However, 1/3 is no price for Wade. The line for total legs is 27.5 and their match at the World Matchplay went 28, so that’s no surprise. However, 16-12 is on the overs and with everything so evenly matched, I think that’s generous. However, if I think it’s going over, the best bet is to take Wayne Jones on the handicap, which is –3.5 legs, on the off chance that Jones was to win 16-11. Yes, he only took 12 legs last time out, but he’s capable of 13 and the difference in price is worth it.

Scott Waites vs Steve Beaton:
Would you have predicted this semi-final? No, neither would I. Scott Waites is the favourite for this match, having come through a tough couple of matches convincingly. However, Steve Beaton managed to beat Phil Taylor, which is no mean feat and no-one had done it outside of the group stages of the Grand Slam of Darts until last night.
Waites averaged 93.69 against Co Stompe, Beaton averaged 97.14 in his win. Beaton’s checkout of 161 and 121 put Waites’ best of 98 to shame, so Beaton might just have the beating of Waites looking at their last match. But if you look back to their last 16 match, it’s more of the same. Beaton has been putting in high averages all tournament with consistently impressive doubling, while Waites hasn’t been convincing. The fact is, Stompe let Waites win thanks to some shocking doubling and bad counting.
Beaton is a wonderful price at 6/4, considering what he’s achieved this week. It also seems like he’ll have the crowd on his side, which is an important thing, as Phil Taylor will no doubt be keen to tell you.
