BDO 2013 World Championship Day Three Premium Picks.
Well, were we got fortunate with Richie George on Day One, we got unlucky with Jeffrey de Graff on Day Two. The young Dutchman came close to a big win over Jan Dekker, leading 2-0 in the final set, only to lose in a sudden-death leg. Ce’st la vie! We did get Jimmy Hendriks’ win over Martin Adams, and James Wilson taking the 2 sets we needed from Stephen Bunting. I did make a typo saying it was -1.5 sets for Wilson, but the handicap was -1.5. Apologies! The frustration started with Gary Stone throwing pub darts in his 3-1 defeat to Steve Douglas. We also got unlucky with Mark Barilli, as I felt he should have closed out the match against Scott Mitchell. The only other thing of note from last night was Rune David’s crazy antics against Wesley Harms. Have you ever seen someone waving to the crowd after putting two darts into the treble 20? Mental.
Tonight we have three matches, with tournament favourite Scott Waites taking his bow in the 2013 BDO World Championship. He takes on Willy van de Wiel in the last match of the night. We start with Geert de Vos facing Tony Eccles, and then we have Ross Montgomery taking on Paul Jennings. So we’ve got a short session tonight.
The Premium Picks went 2-3 last night, and we’re on -1.33 units.
Geert de Vos (14) Vs Tony Eccles.
Two tournament wins for Geert de Vos have built on a win at the Lakeside last year over Tony West, where he was then beaten by eventual winner Christian Kist. He’s not had a great season outside of his tournament wins, but he’s played solid darts. And solid darts is what he’ll need to beat Tony Eccles. The Viper has returned to the BDO for this season, and he picked up the Scottish Open a month after rejoining, and he beat Stephen Bunting and Robbie Green on his way to lift the title. There’s no denying Eccles is a decent player. I think this will be close, and I don’t think there’s any value in Eccles. In fact, I think de Vos should be favourite, with Eccles trading on his name. I love the price of the Belgian, so we’ll start with him tonight.

Ross Montgomery (6) Vs Paul Jennings.
Not a bad year for Montgomery, even though he’s had no major tournament wins. He made the semi-finals of Zuideuin, with some good performances, although it is a venue he has gone well at in the past. As for going well at the Lakeside, he’s won two matches, his most recent against Fabian Roosenbrand. He’s ended up with a horrible draw against Paul Jennings, a quarter-finalist last year, where he lost to Wesley Harms after beating Garry Thompson and Steve Douglas. Jennings hasn’t had the busiest of years, but he’s won one tournament on the circuit, and made one final. He’s not coming into the tournament in amazing form, but there’s no denying he can play well on his day. The price for Jennings considering last year’s run is unbelievable, especially when you consider Montgomery is one of the more vulnerable seeds. Jennings is far too big here, so we’ll take advantage of what I see as a mistake by the bookies.

Scott Waites (3) Vs Willy van de Wiel.
A big match here for Scott Waites. His half of the draw has opened right up with Martin Adams going out last night, and a strong performance here will shorten him up in the market dramatically. Three tournament wins for Waites this year, won his group as the GSOD where he reached the quarter-finals, and he’s made another final this year. It’s not quite the season someone like Stephen Bunting has had, but he’s definitely one of the men to beat. Willy van de Wiel, four finals this year on his tour of Europe, but no tournament wins. He’s not played in the big season ending events, but he’s made it to the Second Round the last three years at the Lakeside. This could be close, as Waites doesn’t exactly hold the Lakeside close to his heart, with his best finish being a quarter-finalist. Yes, there’s no denying he’s a class act, but the worry here is the vanue, much like it used to be with Gary Anderson. The angle I like here is the 180s. Waites and Van de Wiel both scored 5 last year, and the Dutchman actually played less legs. Waites also hammers a lot of 140s, and is a bit like andy Smith in that respect. The price for Van de Wiel most 180s is far too high, as I reckon is should be around the 2/1 mark.
