BDO 2013 World Championship Day Four Premium Picks.
Round One of the 2013 BDO World Championship is over, and we finished it with a bang. We got on the right side of Geert de Vos and Paul Jennings, with a couple of nice wins. While Willy van de Wiel managed few 180s, it wasn’t enough to outscore Scott Waites. In fact, Waites’ 3-0 summed up how well the Yorkshireman played. So we not have our Last 16 line-up, and there’s some names missing that you would expect – Christian Kist and Martin Adams being the most notable.
Tonight the Second Round of the 2013 BDO World Championship gets underway, and we start with Scott Mitchell and Robbie Green. Then it’s Darryl Fitton against Stephen Bunting. Alan Norris takes on Wesley Harms in what could be a classic, before Steve Douglas closes the night’s action against Tony O’Shea.
The Premium Picks went 2-1 last night, and we’re on a profit of 3.55 units after three days of the 2013 BDO World Championship.
Scott Mitchell (12) Vs Robbie Green (5).
Robbie Green was only one of 3 match winners to average over 90 in the first round (Tony Eccles also managed it, but lost), and looked extremely solid in defeating Christian Kist. Green hit 3 180s, and hit a highest checkout of 106. Mitchell had a hard fought win over Mark Barilli, and it looked like he was on his way out. However, he fought back to win 3-2, averaging 80.88, hitting 1 180 and having a highest checkout of 118. His average is pretty poor comapred to Green’s 91.11, and the worry for Mitchell is that his scoring is just too inconsistent. He’s winning legs in around 18 darts, while Kist was winning legs against Green in 15 or 16, as Green wasn’t giving too much away. Green will be too strong for Mitchell, and the handicap of -2.5, while tricky, looks good to me, as we could easily be looking at a 4-1 or 4-0 win for Kong.

Darryl Fitton (16) Vs Stephen Bunting (1).
A big match for both men, as Fitton wants to get a good run under his belt for the first time in a while, and Bunting no doubt wants to prove why he’s the No.1 seed, and finally put in a big showing at the Lakeside. Fitton’s average of 89.31 was one of the best of the round, bettered by Bunting’s 91.83, but not by too much. Fitton hit 5 maximums over the 5 sets, while Bunting managed 4 in his match over the same length. Fitton’s highest checkout was a 102, Bunting’s was a 130. So not much to split them, but the market I like is the Player To Score Most 180s. Fitton actually played 21 legs to Bunting’s 17, and he hit 3 of his maximums in the final set, and looked like he needed to settle in to find his range. Bunting is the power scorer of the two and I think there’s value on him winning this market.

Alan Norris (9) Vs Wesley Harms (8).
A match between two big hitters. Both men have had good seasons, and will be confident going into this, as they know each other’s games well, being teammates. Norris’ 79.98 average in the first round was a shocker, especially when you consider he hit 6 maximums in his match, and he also took out a 125 finish. Harms had a hard time against the “crazy” Rune David, and I think it might have thrown him off his game just a little bit, which would explain the 85.11 average. However, he 3 maximums, and took out a 140 in what was a somewhat effortless display after a slow start. I can see a tight one here if Norris can put his first round effort behind him, but I think the Dutchman Harms can take the win simply because he showed some class in the first round, while Norris was just too inconsistent to be backing.

Steve Douglas (13) Vs Tony O’Shea (4).
Douglas showed me up in the first round, beating Gary Stone 3-1 with an average of 81.66. It wasn’t a great performance, but he was efficient enough, winning a lot of legs in approximately 18 darts. O’Shea was extremely efficient against John Walton, averaging 86.73, scoring 5 maximums, although not troubling the 3-figure finishes. I think that’s O’Shea’s downfall, the fact he can switch off at times, which should allow Douglas to take a couple of sets at the very least of The Silverback. While I think O’Shea will win, I don’t think it will be as easy as his win over Walton, simply because Douglas won’t be as slack on his doubles as Walton was, which was the difference in a few legs. All we need is Douglas to take 2 sets, and I think he’s more than capable after looking at the first round performances.
