Premier League Darts 2014 Week Seven Premium Picks
Premier League Darts hits Leeds tonight, and we’re getting close to the end of the road for two players, and one of them could be Phil Taylor if he doesn’t start getting results going his way. Last week may have just been the start of it as he saw of Dave Chisnall 7-5 with an average of 98.46. It wasn’t vintage Taylor on the doubles, but the scoring is still there. We also had another win for Peter Wright, who is sitting top of the Premier League thanks to his solid performances. Last week, Simon Whitlock was his latest victim, the Aussie capitulating 7-3, with Snakebite averaging a little over 100, with his opponent not even able to break 89. Adrian Lewis struggled to a 7-5 win over Gary Anderson, both men failing to hit the dizzying heights they had set in earlier weeks, both averaging around 90 thanks to a host of missed doubles. Michael van Gerwen and Wes Newton played in the match of the night, with both men averaging well over 100, with Newton losing 7-1. If he had hit more than 10% of his doubles, there might have been a decidedly different outcomes. Last week’s other match say Raymond van Barneveld and Robert Thornton share the spoils. Barney just missed out on a 100 average, and Thornton fired in a 97.48, both men were solid on their finishing, and it was two good performances that got the point they deserved.
Tonight, Phil Taylor tries to keep his season alive as he takes on Wes Newton. Dave Chisnall and Simon Whitlock has a make-or-break match, with a win helping both men with their relegation woes. Robert Thornton takes on Adrian Lewis in what could be a high-scoring encounter if both men play true to form. Raymond van Barneveld takes on this year’s Mr Consistency, Peter Wright. And we have the battle of last weekend’s Players Championship winners, Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson, taking on each other in a battle of the in-form men.
Dave Chisnall vs Simon Whitlock.
Big match for both men, with both Dave Chisnall and Simon Whitlock in desperate need of points this far into the season. Chisnall was not disgraced last week, losing 7-5 to Phil Taylor. Whitlock wasn’t great, yet again, this time against Peter Wright. However, hit a 126 finish in one of his 3 legs that he won. Chisnall won 5 legs last week, with his best out a 73. Chisnall isn’t known for his big finishing, while Whitlock is going to have to rely on them to stand any chance of winning.

Robert Thornton vs Adrian Lewis.
The shock of the Premier League so far has been Robert Thornton’s power scoring. Thornton has 26 maximums so far, and has impressed with his consistency around the treble 20. We all know what Adrian Lewis is capable of, but he’s been in-and-out so far in the Premier League season. Still, he has 16 maximums, and I think he’s good for a few in this match, while Thornton should be good for 4 or 5, as he is every week. The stats have them close, I can’t pick a winner, but I think we’re going to see a lot of 180s here, and the line looks very low.

Gary Anderson vs Michael van Gerwen.
The two in-form players coming into the Premier League are Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen. Both men are playing good darts, and although Gary Anderson lost last week to Adrian Lewis, he wasn’t disgraced in defeat. Michael van Gerwen crushed Wes Newton, and he’ll be looking to do the same again. That being said, Anderson is going to be confident, and there is a good chance of an upset here, as Van Gerwen has been missing doubles at key times during the Premier League, and Anderson’s scoring well enough to keep up with him. Anderson is about right on the outright market, but I think Sky Bet’s Double Chance market gives us a great bit of value here, as I think Anderson and the Draw are worth a dabble.

Wes Newton vs Phil Taylor.
Wes Newton returned from illness last week only to be easily taken apart by Michael van Gerwen. However, he was not disgraced in defeat, apart from his doubling. Newton maybe needed the time off, and his 103.36 was impressive even if he didn’t get up for the win. He scored heavily and pressured MvG. Phil Taylor got another win, and he’s being something of an enigma this year. He’s second bottom, yet he’s one of only two men averaging over 100 in the Premier League so far. His only downfall is his doubling, and that’s where Newton might just get him. Newton is going to have to finish better than last week, and I think he can. His highest checkout in the Premier League is 149, Taylor has a highest out of 140 and he’s played on more match than The Warrior. Newton looks good value to get the highest checkout here, as there are still questions over Taylor’s doubling, so the big outs might not come for him.

Peter Wright vs Raymond van Barneveld.
Last match of the night and Peter Wright looks to keep his 100% record intact against Raymond van Barneveld, and it could be a tough match. Wright has been consistent, but not flashy. He has an average for the season so far of 95.76 and a highest checkout of 132, which he scored last week. Barney has been doing his thing, averaging 98.11 and he hasn’t lost since Week 2, when he lost to Wes Newton. This is going to be close, but the part of Wright’s game that hasn’t impressed me as much as the rest has been his combination finishes. Barney is likely to get at least one 100+ finish, while Wright isn’t a certainty. I like the Dutchman for highest checkout in the match, as I can’t find a way to split them otherwise.
