This week in the European Tour, we’ve got the Hong Kong Open while some of the top golfers are busy at the Volvo World Match Play Championships.
The Hong Kong Open has been in the European Tour for over a decade – it came in in 2001, as the Omega Hong Kong Open. Jose maria Olazabal won that one.
It’s been dominated the last two years by Miguel Angel Jimenez. Jimenez won it in 2013 and 2012. He also won it back in 2007, and also in 2004. So hey – guess who the favourite is to win it? You guessed it – Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Winner #1: Miguel Angel Jimenez
We’d be kicking ourselves if we didn’t back Jiminez as a three time winner.
11/1 is a nice price considering his results here. He’s also still a very consistant golfer – cashing in practically every tournament this season except for three. He even won the Open de Espana and came 4th in the Masters. Even on some tricky courses he’s managed to get some good results this season still.
You just can’t count Jimenez out. We don’t think he will win – but we’d be fools not to bet him when he just hits our threshold for an E/W bet.
Unfortunately, Jimenez is our only betting tip for the Hong Kong Open.
We’ve been looking and trying to find another candidate – but no-one is standing out for us.
With so many top golfers off the tour, and the way the Portugal Masters went with all the bad weather etc – it’s just one of those tournaments where we don’t feel too confident about anyone.
If you are looking for another bet – you could do worse than Gregory Bourdy. he was doing well at the Masters, is a nice 22/1 price.
Ricardo Gonzalez is another one. He’s a massive 60/1 and may be worth a small bet. He’s certainly got a better chance than those odds are giving him.
If you must bet those 2, then bet a quarter of a unit. Nothing more.
HONG KONG OPEN 2014 RESULTS & ANALYSIS:
Like we said – we just had to pick Jimenez for this one. It was hard not to pick him. We didn’t like anyone here and we didn’t exactly love his odds – but it was a bet we felt we had to make. Unfortunately he never got going and was cut after round 2.
Quite the tour, and good to see Ernie Els hanging in there. He was the ONLY 1 of the top 10 favourites to get a top 5 finish, which is a tremendous example of how difficult golf betting can be at times.
