As the PGA tour strides forward, we have the Sony Open this week.
We did of course have a nice win last week, with Hideki Matsuyama being the top Asian winner. A little bit nerve wracking that one, but he came through big and that’s all that matters. Seung-Yul Noh was tremendous as well last week – a lot better than we expected.
The Sony Open takes place in Hawaii, at the Waialee Golf Course. This golf tournament dates back to the 60s, as the Hawaiian Tour. Jimmy Walker comes into this as the tournament winner last year, and the 3rd favourite. 7th favourite is Russell Henley, who shot the best aggregate score on this course in 2013 to win it, at 256.
Always an interesting course with a variety of different winners. Let’s check out the betting odds:

Winner #1:Hideki Matsuyama
It’s really hard not to bet Matsuyama at the moment. 20/1 is a great price on him, and sure this course probably isn’t suited for him but he is on form. He’s cashing in every tournament, has two Tied for 3rd finishes as well. October 9th he was 3rd in the Frys.com Open, and followed it up for a Tied for 10th in the Shriners. In that one he was just two strokes out of the top 5.
The man is on form at the moment, and he’s someone we will be practically blindly betting at odds of 20/1 and above for the forseeable future.
Winner #2:Charles Howell III
It’s no surprise that Howell III is 35/1. He hasn’t played since November, and he had a lot of fairly poor showings when he was last playing.
However this is a course that Howell knows, and loves. He’s played here every freaking year since 2002. He dominates this course. His worst attempt was a 73. He’s fresh and on a break, has finished in the top 10 8 times, and came 2nd twice.
35/1 for that? Yep, I’m down. Show those young pups what you’re made of Charley boy!
Winner #3: Russell Henley
Henley can be inconsistent, and that is the only major concern for us. However he’s coming into this one with a nice record of 2 top 5 finishes in 3 starts already. He’s also won here previously, and he’s had a hot start to the season.
The only major concern is overconfidence, which really does affect him. We hope he keeps his head down, and does the business here.
SONY OPEN RESULTS & ANALYSIS:
As we said when we wrote the tips – based on his form we’d be blindly betting Matsuyama until he did something to change our minds. Well he did just that with the tournament from hell sadly.
Charles Howell III came close to getting us a cash – he was just a few strokes off. As was Russell hanley. A top 5 finish was -13, and Hanley was -10 while Howell III was -9. Considering the odds on both of them – we’re happy with that.
