What a thrilling week it was last week in the golf.
We finished off Saturday with contenders in all 4 tournaments. Henrik Stenson was 2nd in the Arnold Palmer and Jason Kokrak was also hanging about in there. Anirban Lahiri was sitting 2nd in the Hero Indian Open, as was Stacy Lewis in the JTBC Founders Cup. And Wes Short Jr. was 2nd place in the Champions Tour event.
Alas it was not to be with no winners but we did get the following two cashes:
Better than a kick in the nuts!
The second WGC event of the year, the Dell Match Play takes place this week. This is the second year of the round robin format, which replaced the straight 64 man shootout, brought in mainly so the big name players will have a minimum of three matches this week.
Course form will be out the window this week, with this tournament being held at the Austin County Club in Austin, Texas for the first time. An incredibly picturesque course, with a lot of water on the back nine which should make for a good test of nerves in tight matches.
Our first tip this week is the in form Danny Willett, currently ranked in the top ten in the world, and on his debut in this tournament last year he finished in 3rd place. An excellent finish by a man who looks like he will be an important member of the European Ryder Cup team this September despite being a rookie. His odds of 35/1 are tempting, despite his lack of driving accuracy (54.9%). He makes up for that though with GIR of 72.6% on the European Tour. His group, including Brooks Koepka, Billy Horschel and Jaco Van Zyl is winnable and he should have a good chance of beating potential last 16 opponents Justin Rose or Matt Kuchar. Along with taking him e/w to win (it pays out for a semi final place), we also recommend to take Willett to win his group at 9/5. He really should be close to evens for the quality in this group.
For our next pick we are going to look at the Driving Accuracy stats to see what they throw up. Sitting at 8th for Driving Accuracy is Kevin Kisner. This is a player who has started to make himself known on tour and was a player I looked at before the USPGA last season. Currently sitting 2nd in the Fed Ex Cup rankings, he has had a win and a 2nd place finish already this season. Kisner has a very winnable group as he is in with Matsuyama, Cabrera Bello and Kjeldsen, and his odds of 5/2 look generous. He is top 25 for GIR, as well as 4th for birdie average, so he knows how to score, and ranked 4th in sand save % which shows he is able to scramble when the time comes. Oh, and one other little point, he is currently ranked first in all round ranking this season.
Our final tip is probably a very obvious pick, but you can’t ignore Rory McIlroy at 10/1. Last year’s winner is an excellent matchplayer, currently unbeaten in Ryder Cup singles and will be able to handle any pressure this week. Like Danny Willett he should overcome his group with ease. Na and Olesen are good players, but not on Rory’s level. Kevin Na has never been successful at matchplay and Olesen is only in this week due to withdrawls. The fourth member of the group is Smylie Kaufman, the rookie who is having a great season with a half dozen top 15 finishes, but will he be able to handle a one on one match up with McIlroy?
