On June 30th we see the first games in the knockout stage take place. One of those ties is Portugal vs Uruguay, with the winner facing France or Argentina.
Portugal came 2nd in Group B. They tied with Spain on points and Spain went through due to scoring the most goals. It’s been mixed performances from the Portugal side as they drew 3-3 with Spain, scraped a 1-0 win over Morocco and then drew 1-1 with Iran. The story of the team has been Ronaldo and his performances. No-one else is really performing up to par and it’s all reliant on Ronaldo. Can this one man team match up against Uruguay?
Uruguay topped Group A after an incredible performance over Russia and one I certainly wasn’t expecting. They also managed to navigate the group stages without conceding a goal. They had a very patient but inspiring performance as they beat Egypt 1-0. It was a similar like performance against Saudi Arabia. Then they sprung to life with a 3-0 thumping of Russia.
That was an interesting game where it started off looking very open. Uruguay scored off a set piece that I felt Akinfeev should have did better on. It was still all close and then an own goal was scored. At 2-0 down, Russia just self combusted and that was disappointing to see.

Portugal Analysis:
Portugal are actually very lucky to be here as Iran could have stolen the game at the death. Ronaldo also was lucky not to get a red card near the end of that game.
Portugal have overall been disappointing – their defense is okay but out matched against Uruguay and we know what Suarez and Cavani are capable off.
Ronaldo is coming off a bad game in terms of missing a penalty and the elbow – will be interesting seeing if he can bounce back from that. The Iran game they weren’t really able to connect too good with Ronaldo and that was disappointing.
What really concerned me was that as soon as Iran adapted to stop Carvalho, Portugal weren’t sure what to do. Disappointed with the way Portugal couldn’t respond to that.
Uruguay Analysis:
Despite winning the group and not conceding any goals I’m still not totally sold on Uruguay. However they do seem to have a strong defense who will be put to the test going up against the best player in the world.
It’s going to be very interesting seeing how their defense holds up against Ronaldo. They did a good job at limiting Russia and their chances and their countering was excellent.
I liked the movement and creativity over Russia and that could be the difference in this one.
Portugal vs Uruguay Betting Tips:
I’m going to back Uruguay to qualify for 1 unit. I don’t fully rate them yet and I wonder how they’ll respond if they go down a goal so I have my concerns. Their defense has been tight but it’s one thing to not concede against Saudi Arabia and another thing entirely not to concede against Ronaldo. Yeah Portugals creativity the last game was poor and it has been overall throughout the tournament but they are very clinical in front of net.
Based on the way Uruguay played especially against Morocco I could see this being a quiet affair and going to ET.
