With the NBA and NHL wrapping up their seasons this week, it is now time for baseball to take the spotlight in the collective minds of sports fans. To their credit MLB teams have answered the call and reacted with two straight days of crazy baseball games. An eight homerun game by a single team, five position players pitching in a game, the Cubs young guns are starting to deliver, Clayton Kershaw continues to struggle, Joey Gallo continues to hit and the Astros keep looking for real. (We won’t even talk about the Cardinals who are currently being investigated by the FBI for hacking. I never knew they had Crash Override and Acid Burn on the payroll.) It’s setting up to be an interesting year with a lot of new faces in the mix to compete for the World Series. As we just learned from the NBA Finals, new teams competing is always exciting.
The great thing about baseball is that there is never a shortage of games to watch and bet on. There is a full slate today so let’s get to the tips.
As we’ve mentioned before the Milwaukee Brewers are one of the most disappointing teams in the league this season. They are finishing up a three game series against the Royals tonight and this will probably be their best chance at a win as the Royals send their worst starter Jeremy Guthrie and his 5+ ERA to the mound. Of course, the Brewers starters aren’t exactly unstoppable either. Their starter, Jimmy Nelson, has been one of their better starters but his ERA is still over 4 runs. The Brewers could sneak out a win here, but I really think this one is going Over 8 runs. Especially with the way runs have been scored in the league this week.
Last night, the Mets debuted pitching prospect Akeem Morris yesterday and he got rocked by the Blue Jays. Today the Mets start the opposite of the a prospect in Bartolo Colon and look for different results. He’ll face former Mets starter RA Dickey and his knuckleball. This is Dickey’s first start against the Mets who have never seen his knuckle in live play. The line on this one seems to be on perception and the possibility of a bad knuckler day for Dickey with the over/under set at 9 runs. However, both starters have posted allowed 3 runs or less in their last three starts despite being a combined 82 years old. Three out of three games in this series have gone under the posted total and tonight should be the fourth. Under 9 runs is the play here.
An early Cy Young favorite this season is Gerrit Cole of the Pirates with a 10-1 record and 1.82 ERA. He has been dominant and unhitabble as of late. In his last two starts he hasn’t allowed a single run and tonight against the White Sox should be more of the same against the lowly White Sox. Meanwhile, Samardzija has struggled since coming to the White Sox. Cole’s ERA is actually better on the road than it is at home and Pirates -128 is a steal.
