The great DeAndre Jordan free agency of 2015 came to an end last night as he turned his back on the previously agreed deal with the Mavericks and re-signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. There was high drama on the internet with his teammates posting emojis on twitter and, apparently, barricading the door from anyone from the Mavs coming in. It was a weird night that had some interesting gambling effects. Back on July 5th when it looked like Jordan was going to sign with the Mavericks, the Clippers 2016 NBA Futures odds were 20/1. Today, after securing his contract, they now sit at 12/1. Quite a jump in four days. They are certainly a more interesting team going into next year with the additions of Paul Pierce and Lance Stephenson, but they still have to beat the Spurs, Rockets and Warriors to win a title. 12/1 seems about right.
In real sports action, last night saw Clayton Kershaw return to form and post a 13-strikeout complete game against the Phillies. Perhaps he took his All-Star snub to heart? The Cardinals also took a close one against the Cubs in Chicago to tie their four game series.
We have a lot of action to get to today so let’s get into the tips for Thursday July 9th.
Wimbeldon Tennis Betting Tips:
The most competitive rivalry in all of tennis is continuing early tomorrow at Wimbeldon as Andy Murray faces Roger Federer on Wimbeldon’s famous grass. Federer currently leads the all-time rivalry 12-11 including going 3-0 against Murray in 2014, but 2014 was a different time. Murray was fresh off of losing his coach (to Federer) and coming off a pretty serious back injury. He is fully recovered from that injury now and is playing some really great tennis under his new coach Amelie Mauresmo. This one is predicted to be very close, but we really like Andy Murray in this one. The win at Wimbeldon over his greatest rival would be huge for him, he’s fully recovered from his surgery and he’s been playing at a level we haven’t seen from him in years. It should be a great match either way, but Andy Murray -120 is definitely the bet.
MLB Betting Tips:
The Mariners offense has been playing closer to league average thus far in July and has actually knocked out 11 homeruns thus far. A big part of that is Robinson Cano who has looked more like the guy they signed to the big contract as of late. When the offense is playing well, it’s hard to feel doubt that they will win when King Felix is on the mound. His walk rate has been up a tick and strikeouts have been down thus far this season, but he’s still one of the best starters in the league. It’s not often you can get Mariners -135 when Felix Hernandez on the mound so we’re taking it today.
Speaking of ace pitchers, Zack Greinke is currently in the midst of a 27 2/3 innings scoreless streak and he gets the Phillies at Chavez Ravine today. There isn’t a juicer match-up in all of baseball today than that. For good reason the Dodgers are huge -340 favorites, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t value in this start. If Greinke is able to continue his streak (which I think he will) that gives the Dodgers seven runs to play with. Severino Gonzalez hasn’t looked great in his starts, but he should benefit from Chavez Ravine. Take under 7 runs and watch Greinke work his magic.
