The All-Star Break is a fun time for baseball fans, but also a terrible time for baseball fans. You spend the whole season getting around ten games per day and then you are suddenly asked to go four days with just a homerun hitting exhibition and a meaningless game. That’s tough.
Still, the homerun derby last night was amazing. Aaron Judge lived up to the hype of the contest in a way that we haven’t seen since… well, last year with Giancarlo Stanton. That said I definitely got some Ken Griffey Jr., era vibes from the homerun derby. It felt like this exhibition was important and actually cool and fun. I’m no Yankee lover, but the Aaron Judge experience is a fun one. I’m excited to see if he’s able to do anything tonight.
Tonight is the All-Star game and the American League is currently on a four-game winning streak and they are 17-3-1 since 1997. Despite that, the NL is favored tonight because of their home-field advantage.
MLB All-Star Betting Tips:
For tonight’s All-Star game I think we have to stick with what has worked for us and bet the American League +103. The AL teams have a solid mix of young stars like Gary Sanchez, Judge and the Astros trio of Altuve, Correa and Springer while having some scary pitching as well. Chris Sale has been arguably the best pitcher in baseball and he gets the start. With Andrew Miller, Chris Devenski and Craig Kimbrel in the bullpen they should be able to hold any lead.
That isn’t to say that the NL squad doesn’t have as many stars, but the bullpen feels vulnerable with Pat Neskek, Corey Knebel, Brad Hand and Wade Davis likely seeing time. Beware the “only team representative being a bullpen pitcher” pitcher. Whether they put too much pressure on themselves to represent the team or don’t really belong among these elite players, bad things can happen.
With the way that the ball is leaving the park this season, one would think that it should in this game too. The All-Star game is usually around 6-8 runs, but the total on this one is set at 8.5. We’ve only seen the All-Star game go over that number twice in the past ten years though. I like the chances of the over, but history tells me otherwise. Proceed at your own risk.
NBA Summer League Betting Tips:
The NBA Summer League has taken on a new level of importance this year with one of the best drafts we’ve seen in a decade. We’ve already seen great games from top picks Lonzo Ball and Markelle Fultz with other young stars putting in great performances as well.
One game that everyone had circled was the 76ers and Celtics game tonight as we could’ve seen Fultz against Jayson Tatum, two players who were essentially traded for one another. Unfortunately, Fultz went down with an injury and will miss the rest of the summer league. This leaves Boston to roll and I think they will. They have a stacked team with Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Ante Zizic. These games come down to talent and individual performances and the Celtics are built for that. Without Fultz, I don’t think the Sixers are. Celtics -4.
