We had a week off from the English Premiership action last week as our attention turned to the World Cup 2018 qualifiers. For the home nations, it was a mixed bag, as England beat Malta 2-0, then drew away to Slovenia 0-0. Scotland were embarrassed with a 1-1 draw at home to Lithuania and then a 3-0 defeat away to Slovakia. Northern Ireland easily beat San Marino 4-0, then fell 2-0 to Germany. As for Wales, they drew 2-2 with Austria, then 1-1 with Georgia. It’s a big wake-up call for the Welsh after their heroics at Euro 2016. Of course, being Scottish, I have nothing to add, other than it’s the same old, same old, isn’t it? But we can forget the horrific weekend just past and concentrate back on all things English Premeriship now. A fortnight ago, things didn’t go to play for Manchester City or Manchester United, as Spurs took care of the blue half of Manchester 2-0, while United were pegged back to a 1-1 draw with Stoke. The other results more or less went to plan, but Spurs have really blown everything apart with that huge win, and now we could be in for yet another unpredictable season in the EPL.
It really was not a great week for Mark Lawrenson, even though he got four correct results and one correct score. The fact is, three of his correct results were short-priced favourites, and his correct score in the Hull vs Chelsea game only paid 7/1. So, not really what we wanted going into an international weekend. Yes, the BBC prediction legend finished with a weekly loss of -4.36 units and Lawro’s loss has now creeped up to a pretty woeful -21.11 units.
