The MLB trade deadline came and went with a lot of teams choosing to rest on their laurels. The Astros were the big winner as they added Zack Greinke, Joe Biagini and Aaron Sanchez to their pitching staff. They already had one of the best rotations and best bullpens in baseball, and they have now gotten even better.
Teams that you would normally expect to add that were quiet were the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers. For the Yankees, it’s about getting players healthy and that being their late season addition. For the Dodgers, it’s about the internal upgrades as they are calling up top pitching prospect Dustin May. For the Red Sox, it’s paying the price for the years of doing deadline deals and having the cupboard bare in terms of prospects.
There are a lot of teams in the hunt still, but one injury can derail some of these teams. Their inability to add going forward will cost some team and the lifeless deadline will haunt them.
In a fitting bit of synergy, the trade deadline was yesterday which signals the beginning of the end of the MLB season while the first NFL preseason game popped up on the schedule today. Nothing signals that summer is nearing its end like the trade deadline and the start of the NFL preseason.
MLB Betting Tips:
Toronto Blues Jays at Baltimore Orioles: This is a match-up of two weakened offenses facing two pretty solid pitchers and the total is set quite high.
Trent Thornton is homer prone, but he’s got good strikeout numbers and has been better on the road with a 4.70 ERA/4.17 FIP. This is a good match-up for him as the Orioles are near the bottom of the league in homers and have a .743 OPS/95 wRC+ against righties this season.
The Orioles send Asher Wojciechowski who has been a bright spot for them. He’s had huge strikeout numbers early and has a 3.60 ERA/3.92 FIP on the season.
This line feels about a run too high as I can see both starters having a good game here. Going with the under.
Bet Orioles/Blue Jays Under 10.5 Runs
Tampa Rays at Boston Red Sox: Brendan McKay has been good in his limited starts this season, but he’s yet to face anything quite like this Red Sox offense at home. He’s been hit hard by the White Sox and Yankees, and I think he’ll add the Red Sox to that list today.
The Red Sox send Andrew Cashner who is getting more comfortable in his new role with Boston. His last start was his best to date in Boston and I am hoping he continues that trend here.
NFL Preseason Betting Tips:
Denver Broncos at Atlanta Falcons: This is the Hall of Fame game and because of that both of these teams will play five preseason games instead of the traditional four. Because of that, I am expecting to see even less of the major players than normal. The Falcons’ Julio Jones will not play and I’d expect very little of Matt Ryan. To me, that puts the ball in Denver’s hand. They have more young players competing for playing time and looking to prove themselves. They have more skin in this game and they should win here.
