This week on the PGA Tour we have two events. The big one is of course the Barbasol Championship in Alabama. Then there’s this minor one that we’re covering here – The Open Championship, or the British Championship taking place in Fife, Scotland at St. Andrews.
The Open is the oldest out of all 4 majors, and first began back in 1860. Quite a long time ago. It’s rotated between multiple golf courses. Last year it was Royal Liverpool, and the year before it was Muirfield. If using course data, you’d want to look at 2010 and 2005, the last two times it was at St Andrews. It was also at St Andrews in 2000 when Tiger Woods won it for the first time of asking.
It’s a tournament that usually always rewards the most skillful player. Rory McIlroy won it last year, and Phil Mickelson the year prior. At St Andrews, the last two winners have been Louis Oosthuizen and Tiger Woods.
The Open 2015 Betting Odds:
- Jordan Spieth: 7/1
- Dustin Johnson: 11/1
- Rickie Fowler: 18/1
- Adam Scott: 22/1
- Henrik Stenson: 22/1
- Louis Oosthizen: 22/1
- Justin Rose: 25/1
- Jason Day: 33/1
- Paul Casey: 35/1
- Sergio Garcia: 35/1
Our good friend Martin Kaymer is also 35/1. No surprise that Jordan Spieth is the favourite and he should be there or thereabouts – but 7/1 just isn’t a price we can justify. Here’s what we can justify:
The Open Betting Tip #1: Dustin Johnson
We have had our eye on Dustin Johnson for a month now, but unfortunately he kept playing really well to the point we’re only getting 11/1 odds on him. Doesn’t help that Rory is out – but we were hoping he would come in under the radar. Performances like 8th at the Byron Nelson, 13th at the Memorial and then 2nd at the US Open screwed us up there.
However we are still taking Johnson. The driving length he gets off the tee, plus his records at the majors and the open itself is really good. We know he has a choke record but we like him to be amongst the leaders and 11/1 is just enough for us to bet him E/W.
The Open Betting Tip #2: Tommy Fleetwood
WIth a score of -24 in his last 4 rounds at St Andrews, factoring in the two dunhill tournaments, Fleetwood is just a beast on this course. He is a high price of 80/1, and although his major record isn’t that great we’re hoping his course form will count and steer him in to the leaders, and possibly with a win.
With paying out Top 6 on the E/W market, the 80/1 is worth it knowing what he is capable of.
The Open Betting Tip #3: David Howell
The form David Howell has shown recently is what made us consider him as a dark horse. The more we looked at him, the more we liked. He showed he can handle the majors with his solid finish last year at the Open. He’s also a previous Dunhill winner, and is coming off the back of a fine performance. A whopping price of 125/1 is just lovely to us.
