This week in the Champions Tour, we have the Dick’s Sporting Good Open. This event has always been called this, and has been part of the Champions Tour since 2007. R.W. Eaks was the inaugural winner.
Notable is that after round 1 of play, a concert takes place on the 18th. Previous bands have included Hootie and the Blowfish, and Maroon 5. This year, featuring guest Sam Hunt, will be Lady Antebellum.
There have been no repeat winners of this tournament. Last years winner was the one Bernhard Langer who took it down by a stroke over Woody Austin and Mark O’Meara.
The golfers are coming into this off the Boeing Classic – and boy, what a thrilling tournament that was. Billy Andrade had a disastrous last day of +1 – but that 65 he shot in round 2 made it all good.
Dick’s Sporting Good classic 2015 Betting Odds:
- Bernhard Langer: 10/3
- Kenny Perry: 13/2
- Jeff Maggert: 10/1
- Woody Austin: 14/1
- Scott Dunlap: 16/1
- Mark O’Meara: 20/1
- Stephen Ames: 20/1
- Marco Dawson: 20/1
- Michael Allen: 20/1
- Kevin Sutherland: 22/1
Some very surprising odds – this is the tightest odds in the champions tour we can remember. Usually when you get to the 8th-10th place odds, they’re in the 30s. Very interesting and a distinct lack of value.
Dick’s Sporting Goods Open Betting Tip #1: Mark O’Meara
We’ll be taking Mark O’Meara for half a unit – splitting it over a Top 5 Finish, and a win.
O’Meara is 20/1 to win. He’s never won this before but last year he came very close. He came tied for 2nd and was extremely consistent throughout the tournament. Langer was just slightly better.
O’Meara however is heating up big time. He’s actually had a very solid Champions Tour but has always fallen under our radar for whatever reason – and this is the first time we are actually betting O’Meara. After a poor showing at the Senior Open however he’s really turned things around.
First a 3rd place at the Shaw Charity Classic, then a third place last week at the Boeing Classic. That coming off a +1 first day as well.
O’Meara is in form and we’ll be taking him to hopefully continue that fine form here.
Dick’s Sporting Goods Open Betting Tip #2: John Cook
John Cook will be our final betting tip for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open, and even then it’s going to be just a quarter unit bet split over Top 5 finish and to win.
This is one where honestly – we don’t expect to win. But the value is something we just need to take a look at and say yep – it’s worth a quarter unit.
Cooks form at this course has been solid. In 2014 he got a tied for 7th finish and it would have been higher if not for a evens last day. Before that he had shot a 67 and a 65 – leading the field after day 1.
In 2013 it was the opposite – he started off slow but again hit a 65 on the last day.
So Cook has the course form. His current form? Not so much. This year he has only had 2 top 10 finishes – both tied for 5th. But he actually played well at the Boeing Classic on the last day with a 67. That was coming off a 79 2nd day – huge bounce back that, and we’re hoping that may give him that extra confidence.
We like the odds more than anything though. At 80/1 it’s worth a value bet.
