How shocking was that VAR decision in the Villa game? If you haven’t seen it be sure to look it up. I’ve read conspiracy theories that the EPL are deliberately botching it as they don’t want VAR and while I laughed at that initially – over the past week or two it really does seem to be the case. Just a joke.
January 2nd, 2020 is quite the quiet day for football action.
We’ve got Liverpool vs Sheffield United in the EPL. I’m at the point where I am now rooting against Liverpool just in the hope they can make things interesting.
We’ve got two games in the English Championship, then there is uh…Algeria, Egypt, Qatar and the UAE? Fun stuff.
Tips should be fun over the next little while that’s for sure.
Let’s tackle the two English Championship games taking place on January 2nd:
Derby County vs Barnsley Betting Tips:
Derby County have pulled off a big two games without a loss. They got a 1-1 draw away to Wigan then pulled out a big 2-1 win at home to Charlton. Both key games in the relegation race for Derby.
Barnsley are 2nd bottom however come into this on a great run of form. They haven’t lost in 5 games with two victories in there over Millwall and QPR. They have brutal away form at 1-3-8 however have beaten Millwall and drew iwth Swansea in their last two away games.
Derby are a pretty solid home team despite their league situation with 6 wins in 13 games, and only 2 losses.
Wayne Rooney is rumoured to make his Derby debut however they will be without Tom Lawrence again. That’s not confirmed yet though.
However with Derbys home form, a confidence building win over Charlton, and the possibility of Rooney making an appearance – I’ve got to back Derby here. I think they could see the signing of Rooney as a real turning point regardless of whether he plays or not.

Swansea City vs Charlton Betting Tips:
Swansea are 9th in the Championship as of this writing and will be looking to boost up the table. They struggled at home to Barnsley in their last game, while Charlton had a great 3 game unbeaten run snapped away to Derby.
Swansea are heavy favourites in this one at 1.55 odds. They have been quite inconsistent at home this season with 5 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses. Charlton struggle everywhere and are have just 2 wins and 4 draws in 12 games.
Despite their issues Charlton has a solid offensive record. Both teams have issues in defense and Swansea are missing a couple of players like Declan John and Joe Rodon. Mike Van Der Hoorn may also miss this clash.
With the two weak defenses, it’s worth a put on the goals in this one. I think Both Teams to Score is a decent little play. I can’t see Swansea being held at bay, while they have some serious defensive issues and think Charlton can get a goal. Charlton have been scoring quite frequently lately and home/away stats are generally the same for that.
