Vincent van der Voort Vs Justin Pipe
Vincent van der Voort got a bit unlucky against Tony O’Shea. He put in a big average of just under 101, but he met a man matching him and capable of the big finishes. Likewise, Justin Pipe can feel a bit unlucky with his scoreline against James Wade. His average wasn’t the greatest, but he missed double 10 for a 140 checkout, which would have kept him in the match. Now, Pipe’s slow, methodical style might just scupper VDV here. It could become a scrappy match and VDV doesn’t like scrappy matches. Pipe’s price is tasty here and we’ll have a dabble on him.

Mark Webster vs Mark Hylton:
Mark Webster was another unlucky man last night. It’s not that he played poorly against Wayne Jones, but he just couldn’t win the scrappy legs, which he was punished for, eventually. Mark Hylton was out first whitewash of the tournament, losing 5-0 to Gary Anderson. While Hylton’s average was handy, it’s mainly because he didn’t get too near a double. Webster’s priced about right at 1/3, considering the calibre of opposition he’s playing, but we won’t get rich backing a 1/3 shot over the best of 9 format.
Recommend: No bet.
John Henderson Vs Stacy Bromberg:
The two Grand Slam of Darts debutants lost in their first matches and John Henderson didn’t really show what he is capable of. Stacy Bromberg, on the other hand, played about how we’d have expected. She can consider herself somewhat lucky to win a leg against a player like Mervyn King when she averaged just over 61. Henderson averaged just below 90, so on paper this should be a route for Henderson and I think it will be. He’s capable of big scores, while Bromberg is not. Henderson at 1/14 is probably more than generous.

Simon Whitlock vs Colin Obsborne:
Simon Whitlock had a shocker last night. He missed too many darts at doubles, too many darts were straying into the 1 bed and, all in all, it was a shocking performance by a man who many think is the second best in the world at the moment. Osborne, on the other hand, found a man in Robert Thornton who was playing well. Osborne started well, then found nothing in the home straight, which was a shame. Whitlock averaged around the 87 mark, just marginally more than Osborne. The battle of the Wizards should be close and if Whitlock takes it, I wouldn’t be surprised, but something just didn’t seem right with him. To be honest, I wouldn’t be backing Whitlock at 1/3 after his display last night, but I couldn’t bring myself to backing Osborne knowing that Whitlock did average higher than him in a poor display. Add to the fact Whitlock has the Indian sign over Osborne and it’s a match where we should just watch and find out where Whitlock’s head is.

Dave Chisnall vs Robert Thornton:
Two surprising winners last night in Dave Chisnall and Robert Thornton, as neither had been up to much in the later part of 2010, but both played out of their skin to record convincing wins. Both men averaged just in the 90s, which was more than enough to win their respective matches. Chisnall is quite a big favourite here with the bookies, but the way Thornton played showed he’s got some sort of form back and his price is just a bit too big here.

James Wade vs Tony O’Shea:
One of these men impressed last night, the other didn’t. Tony O’Shea put in a huge average of around 103, while James Wade struggled against Justin Pipe and the scoreline flattered him and his 88 average. O’Shea has proven he loved the stage in Wolverhampton and I think it can continue tonight against the world No.2. The bookies have him a pretty big dog considering the first round performances of the players.

Mervyn King vs Terry Jenkins:
Both winners in their first round, although both men’s performances differed somewhat. Jenkins was very solid against John Henderson, averaging a shade under 90. King averaged a shade over 80 in his 5-1 defeat of Stacy Bromberg. Both men have had poor 2010s by their high standards, but this might be the boost one of them needs and I think we have to back Jenkins on his very solid display last night.

Gary Anderson vs Wayne Jones:
Two winners in contrasting fashions last night. Gary Anderson whitewashed Mark Hylton 5-0, while Wayne Jones won 5-2, but not in the most convincing fashions, missing a multitude of doubles on his way to a scrappy victory. A look at the averages sums up why Anderson is a short price to win this match. Anderson averaged 98.88, while Jones averaged 93.76. Now, while a average of almost 94 is good, it does hide the doubling problems Jones showed. If his doubling had been sharper, his average would have been right up with Anderson’s. Anderson will want to win this and again show that he’s a player to be feared.
