A big make-up game goes down today as the Chicago Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers. This is just one game, a make-up from a rain delay earlier in the season, but this is pretty big one for the Chicago Cubs. Yesterday’s win put them back at .500 at 42-42, but they are currently 3.5 games back of the Brewers for first in the division. They are calling back up Kyle Schwarber for this game and they really need him to be what everyone thought he would be before the season. He killed the ball in his brief Triple-A stint, but the majors have been hard on him this year. If he doesn’t come back, we might have to get used to a world where maybe the 2017 Chicago Cubs just aren’t that good. I know that sounds weird, but their third best player has been Jon Jay this year and that’s about all you need to know about them.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have the Dodgers and Diamondbacks wrapping up their series tonight. These have been the two best teams in the National League thus far this season and they wrap it up tonight. The Dodgers have just been otherworldly this team and it’s scary to think how good their farm still is. They are either going to trade for big upgrades or call it internal upgrades. Maybe both. This really is looking like the year that LA gets over that World Series hump. There is a lot of season left, but they are just amazing right now and it’s hard to see that going away.
MLB Betting Tips:
The Cubs and Brewers play early today at 2:20 Eastern time, but it is one of my favorite betting games on the board. I think there is good value on the Brewers +150. They have played well on the road this year and they hit lefties well. Mike Montgomery is good, but he doesn’t scare me and I think the Brewers can get to him. The best play here though is the over 9 runs. Montgomery will get hit and Zach Davies has been hit all season with an ERA over 5.00. We think this game should be important to both teams so I am not worried about players being tired or anything like that.
Milwaukee just swept the Baltimore Orioles and now Baltimore heads to Minnesota. A bad showing here could be the end of their contention in 2017 as they are down to 40-44. I think they’ll have a bad showing tonight against Jose Berrios who has looked great this year. Dylan Bundy is the nominal ace for the Orioles, but he has a 4.86 SIERRA and a 35% hard contact rate. The Twins -138 should roll here.
One of the big moves of the offseason was the Dodgers bringing back Rich Hill. He rewarded them by looking bad early in the year with an ERA over 4.00. As of late though, he has looked like the guy they paid for. In his last three starts he has a 1.89 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 19 innings. He goes against Robbie Ray tonight and the Dodgers are tough on lefties. This line is a bit high, but I think the Dodgers -149 are a near lock.
