What a great first weekend of the NFL it’s been thus far and hopefully Monday night can live up to that hype. We saw the Cleveland Browns already improve on their 2017 record and an amazing performance from Aaron Rodgers in leading the Packers back after an injury scare.
Tonight we turn our attention to a team that hopes to be right there with the Packers in the NFC North: the Detroit Lions. The Lions brought in coach Matt Patricia who they are hoping can turn things around for them. They still have Matthew Stafford behind center, but the defense is pretty new and that is Patricia’s forte as the long time Patriots defensive coordinator. He’ll have an easy time doing that against this Jets offense that projects to be one of the worst in football.
In the late game, we have the Los Angeles Rams taking on the Raiders. This one could be a bit more exciting on offense with the Rams great offense on the field and the Raiders weakened defense after trading Khalil Mack. Look forward to the announcers fawning over Jon Gruden, their old partner in the booth.
New York Jets vs. Detroit Lions Betting Tips:
Sam Darnold might have a bright future, but this is not a good introduction for him. The Patriots under Patricia would often rush three and send eight back, which creates a really difficult zone for rookie quarterbacks to decipher. He’ll need to make quick decisions and I think he’ll be forced to run a lot.
That’s one of his strengths, but your strengths can become your weaknesses when that’s what the opponent wants you to do. I can see him having a really rough day here with the defense and the Lions offense should do the rest.
Los Angeles Rams vs. Oakland Raiders Betting Tips:
Speaking of bad match-ups for your first game, meet Jon Gruden. There are few coaches in the league who know how Gruden coaches like Sean McVay who is a former protege of Gruden’s. For his first game as Raiders head coach, he might be relying on things that’s he’s done in the past and nobody knows those things quite like McVay.
That’s before you even get to the Rams offense that kills teams by throwing to Todd Gurley out of the backfield. The Raiders had a great guy to stop that, but with Khalil Mack now playing in Chicago that is not the case. I really think the Rams are going to score 35+ points here and absolutely roll.

One game that I couldn’t skip despite the NFL action is the Braves over the Giants. The Braves are clicking right now and are trying to click up the NL East. While the Giants are just waiting for this season to be over. They lose Buster Posey to injury, they traded Andrew McCutchen and now even Ryder Jones is out. This offense is Triple-A level and they have just a 58 wRC+ over the past two weeks. I think that the Braves are going to absolutely roll here.
