PDC 2013 World Championship Day One Premium Picks.
So it’s finally time. I’m like a kid at Christmas… well, it is Christmas, but still, forget the annual gift giving and all that nonsense, we’ve got darts to be watching. I’ve slept around 4 hours a night for the past week, just because my brain has been working overtime on the World Championship selections. I’ve picked out some big outsiders in Stuart Kellet and Darryl Gurney for a bit of a trade in the outright market, and I’ve been trying to find the value for all the subscribers.
Before we get into the tips, I want to remind you of the great offer from Victor Chandler. Victor Chandler are refunding all bets placed on the outright market until the start of the second round if Phil Taylor wins the World Championship.
Qualifying Match
Andree Welge Vs Leung Chung Nam
The experience lies with the German here. Andree Welge had his chances for a huge upset against Colin Lloyd two years ago, so Chung Nam shouldn’t scare hi too much, especially with his experience on the European Tour. The Hong Kong thrower shouldn’t trouble Welge, and the bookies agree. There’s no value to be had, and the bookies aren’t pricing up most market for this match. We’ll give this one a miss.
Recommend: No bet.
Robert Thornton (17) Vs Magnus Caris
An interesting first round match for us, and although not the most exciting first round match to kick off the 2013 World Championship, it’s still got the potential to be exciting.
Robert Thornton has had the best year of his career, winning the UK Open, beating Phil Taylor twice on TV and winning his fair share of floor tournaments. He’s some people’s idea of an outside chance for the World Championship, and he could have had a worse draw than this.
Magnus Caris caused a bit of a stir when he got his Tour Card, getting some nice results, before consolidating it with solid performances on the floor. But he’s gone right off the boil, playing distinctly average darts, while the younger generation take over.
I don’t think Caris will cause Thornton too much trouble here. The Swede hasn’t built on his solid re-start to his PDC career, and he’s not been in the greatest form when he’s been playing the floor tournaments. Thornton, on the other hand, has been one of the top five players in the PDC this year, even if he is only the No.17 seed. I think Thornton will enjoy this warm-up, and should comfortably get past Caris, as the Swede’s scoring should be no match for the Scotsman. I don’t think we’ll see many legs, so the 15.5 line is quite nice.

Paul Nicholson (16) Vs Co Stompe
Not too long ago, this would have been a match between to form players in the top 32. Now we’ve got an out of sorts Dutchman against an Aussie Englishman who’s shown glimmers of form interspersed with shocking darts. And, of course, I can’t deny the love I’ve had over the years for a certain Mr Stompe.
Paul Nicholson has come back to some kind of form, winning some televised matches, His run to the quarter-finals of the World Grand Prix was a welcome return to form, then he made the final of the Dutch Masters, and it was a sign The Asset was finding a bit of form. He was unlucky not to make it out of his group at the Grand Slam of Darts, but it wasn’t like he was shocking. He played good darts, and just got unlucky.
Co Stompe, what can I say about his year? He’s been injured, he’s had no form, and it’s just been a terrible 2012. In fact, the Dutchman hasn’t made a quarter-final all year. There’s no denying, however, that he loves the Ally Pally, and he can’t be written off just yet.
I do think Nicholson is going to win this, but what you have to remember is that Stompe is a power scorer at times. Yes, he’ll throw junk, but he’s also going to group his darts beautifully, as he has done in the past. Nicholson should win through consistency, but Stompe is going to put in some purple patches where he’ll batter that Treble 20. He’s a nice price to score the most 180s, so we’ll be going there.

Adrian Lewis Vs Gino Vos
The World Champion takes his bow on the Ally Pally stage amidst a lot of news/controversy. First we had “Clicking-gate” where Richie Burnett just wasn’t happy with his alleged clicking of the darts on stage. Then Lewis makes the news by becoming a father and just not performing during the Players Championship as a man looking to defend his World Championship should. And has anyone heard anything bad about Gino Vos? Uh… no.
You take out the World Championship and Lewis has had a quiet year compared to his compatriots. He’s won the German Masters and the World Cup of Darts, and that’s it. For the World Number 2, he’s not made as much of an impression as a lot of players on the ProTour. But there’s no denying he’s a class act, as his two World Championships show. His best result in a major this year is the quarter-finals of the World Matchplay. But that was 5 months ago.
Gino Vos has had a solid year since qualifying from Q School. He’s not set the world alight, but he’s qualified for two European Tour events, and made a few quid on his first year on the ProTour. That being said, he’s not exactly playing amazing darts, and it’s going to be a tough match for him in his first PDC World Championship.
Last year, Adrian Lewis has almost come unstuck, last year almost losing to Nigel Heydon, But he managed through fortuitously, and went on to win his second World Championship. And some would argue that he’s got an easier match this year. However, I think Gino Vos is one for the future, and he’s got nothing to lose coming in. If Nigel Heydon can push Lewis, I sure as hell think Vos can, especially at the price on offer. 6/1 is a price we can get on-board with on what is a relatively short format, and against a player whose form is unbelievably patchy. If Lewis’ mind is on his baby, we could end up with a shock result.

Painter Vs Welge/Chung Nam
This is probably going to be Kevin Painter Vs Andree Welge, but there’s no prices on offer at the moment. I actually think Painter can go deep this year, and Welge or Chung Nam aren’t going to stand in his way. It should be a routine win for The Artist, and there’s going to be no price about him. Just enjoy the last match of the night, and hope that Painter gets a challenge.
