Week 1 of the NFL season is in the books. A lot of things happened, but most surprising of all is that Jared Goff and Alex Smith were two of the best passers of the weekend. That was not expected whatsoever. We have a few days to reboot for next week so let’s take a look at what’s going on in baseball.
Tonight, the Indians have the chance to make history and tie the Oakland Athletics for the longest win streak in MLB history at 20 games. They couldn’t possibly have a better match-up to do so as they face the weak Detroit Tigers. The Indians will send their ace Corey Kluber to the mound and to tilt things even further their way, they’ll face Matt Boyd who is having an awful season. It feels very likely that we’re going to see history tonight as the Indians are -420 favorites in this one. That is one of the bigger baseball moneylines you will ever see.
The playoff races are still going on in the NL Central and the AL second Wild Card. There are some games tonight where teams can really help themselves gain some ground so we’ll be keeping an eye on those.
MLB Betting Tips:
One team that is sort of still in the race, but just barely is the Baltimore Orioles. They send Dylan Bundy to the mound against the Blue Jays tonight in what should be a winnable contest. Bundy is as close to an ace as the Orioles have, but the reason I like Baltimore is Joe Biagini on the mound for Toronto. He has a 6.48 ERA in seven home starts this year and has been hit hard. The Orioles often hit the ball hard so this could be a good one for them. Give me the Orioles -127.
Milwaukee had a great weekend, sweeping the Cubs in Chicago, but then came home last night and lost to the Pirates badly. They’ll have their chance to redeem themselves tonight with Brent Suter on the mound against Gerrit Cole. The Pirates are one of the worst hitting teams against lefties and the Brewers really need this one. Milwaukee -115 is a solid play.
The top run scoring game of the night has a chance to be the Padres at the Twins. Travis Wood goes against a hot Twins offense while the Twins send Kyle Gibson to the mound. Gibson has looked good recently, but the peripheral stats show no improvement and his ERA is over 5 for the season. I think he gets hit by the weak Padres offense while the Twins slug away. Over 9.5 runs in this one just isn’t high enough.
If it weren’t for the Indians, people would be talking about the Diamondbacks. They are fresh off a 13-game winning streak and are riding the hot hand of JD Martinez who has been killing it since the trade. They face the Rockies at home tonight and if this season has taught us anything, it’s that the Diamondbacks are much, much better than Colorado. Arizona -125 now and in the potential Wild Card game.
