It was a great weekend for sports as the first week of college football is now in the books. One of the big stories of the weekend is Jalen Hurts’ debut with the Oklahoma Sooners. The former Alabama QB transferred to Oklahoma where he could have full reigns over the offense and the results were great in the first game.
Hurts went 20-for-23 passing the ball with 332 yards and three touchdowns, he also had 16 carries for 176 yards and three touchdowns rushing the ball. If he continues to play with that level of explosiveness, Oklahoma should be a threat this season.
In sadder news, USC lost quarterback JT Daniels for the season this weekend. He had a hot start to the game, but he went down with an injury of a torn ACL and torn meniscus, and he’ll be out for the year. Young Kedon Slovis will take over the reins.
It’s Labor/Labour Day in the US and Canada so that means lots of day games in baseball and football. Nothing really stuck out in baseball, but we do have a college football pick as well as a CFL pick. Let’s get into it.
College Football Betting Tips:
Notre Dame at Louisville: Last season was an utter disaster for Louisville as the team quit on their coach and they finished the season with a ridiculous 1-11 against the spread record. They are returning a lot of starters here and have a new coaching staff, but this team is going to need some work to get back to where they once were as they are firmly in rebuild mode right now.
Notre Dame is in a completely different boat, they are coming off a CFB playoff appearance last year and looking to improve on last year. They brought back some starters, including quarterback Ian Book, and are a big favorite in this game.
I don’t think you should be scared off by the big line here. Notre Dame is better on both sides of the ball and they are going to pound the run to control the clock in this game. An early lead will continuing being extended and I think they win this one by three touchdowns.

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders: Bo Mitchell was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player and Grey Cup MVP in 2018, but he hasn’t played since June 29th and his team has predictably struggled without him. Well, Calgary is getting him back for this one and he has been sorely missed.
While Edmonton has been much more of an up-and-down team, that is pretty much who they are at this point. Trevor Harris can put up some good numbers, but he’s not quite the QB that Mitchell is. This Calgary team was expected to be back in the mix for the title again this year before the injury and now that Mitchell is back, I expect them to get right back in the mix. A win today on Labour Day will be a great way to start that off.
