The European Tour is back, and we kick start 2015 with the South African Open Championship.
This great event takes place in Johanneseburg, in South Africa. It’s one of the oldest tournaments in the world, and has been known as the South African Open Championship since 2008. Last years winner was Morten Ørum Madsen. Going back further, it was Henrik Stenson, Hennie Otto, Ernie Els, Richie Ramsay and Richard Sterne.
There’s been a lot of consistent winners on this tournament. Tim Clark and Trevor Immelman have both won twice for example – and Ernie Els has won 5 tournaments. The bookies know they’re going to get action on Els because why wouldn’t you? This course breeds consistency. Els is joint 3rd favourite at 16/1 to take down the South African Open Championship. This is the 2nd time it takes place at the Glendower Golf Club.
Let’s check out the top 10 in betting odds:
South African Open Championship 2015 Betting Odds:
- Charl Schwartzel: 7/1
- Branden Grace: 8/1
- Ernie Els: 16/1
- George Coetzee: 16/1
- Hennie Otto: 18/1
- Richard Sterne: 20/1
- Jbe Kruger: 20/1
- Thomas Aiken: 25/1
- Andy Sullivan: 25/1
- Jaco Van Zyl: 33/1
While we would love to see Ernie Els take it down – we just can’t see that happening. Els is in there because he attracts the casual punters and that’s why he is that price. Don’t worry that’s a good thing – it means everyone below him gets much better value on them.
All odds are from now let’s get to the South African Open Championship Betting Tips…
South African Open Championship 2015: Winner #1: Merrick Bremner
You might wonder why we’d mention Merrick Bremner considering he’s a whopping 66/1. Well – Bremner took down the BMG Classic which is part of the Sunshine Tour – and that was at the very same course.
At 66/1, you just have to include Bremner considering how well he did there. He is familiar with the course, knows the ins and outs and really did have a solid outing here.
South African Open Championship 2015 Winner #2: Hennie Otto
We’re also going to go with Hennie Otto to win his second SA Open Championship. He won it in 2011 and last year, he came tied for 2nd here. Sure his win really doesn’t factor in much to this one – but it’s still something to slightly consider, and his performance says it all last year. Honestly if it wasn’t for a bad 1st day he would have walked that tournament last year. He also came tied for 2nd in the Sunshine Tour BMG Classic 2 years ago.
Winner #3: Jbe’ Kruger
He can be very inconsistent, but this is also a course where he has had a good history. Last year he came tied for 2nd, after shooting two 65s but then a 70 and a 71. Very erratic form. He didn’t play here as part of the Sunshine tour last year – but if he can get some consistency going, he’s got a good chance of doing it.
This one is razor thin in value though as he can be so erratic.
SA OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 2015 RESULTS & ANALYSIS:
Was cool to see the favourite Charl Schwartzel get to a playoff – pity he lost. What a tight tournament that was though.
Unfortunately we came close but no cigar. We said Jbe Kruger was so erratic. He finished the first day as the LEADER, shooting a 66. Then he shoots a bloody 80 the next day. Are you kidding me? Unreal. Merrick Bremner could not get going, and we also came relatively close with Hennie Otto. Otto came Tied for 13th, however he was just 2 strokes off the 5th spot. At 18/1 that was a nice one that didn’t pay off.
Onwards and upwards.
