The knockout stages of the 2018 World Cup sees Spain take on Russia, with the winners of this one taking on the winners of the Croatia vs Denmark clash.

Spain vs Russia takes place on July 1st, 2018.

Results wise, Spain haven’t really been convincing. They opened with a 3-3 draw against Portugal and followed that up with a tight 1-0 win over Iran. They then wrapped things up with a 2-2 draw against Morocco with an injury time goal from Aspas. They top the group with just one victory and with just one more goal scored versus Portugal which put them top.

Russia have been an interesting one. They finished 2nd in the group. No-one had high expectations for them after some poor friendly results in the build up to the World Cup however they came out flying with a 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, and added to that with a 3-1 victory over Egypt.

Unfortunately they lost 3-0 to Uruguay and that led to a lot of questions about the Russian team.

Very disappointed in the Russia performance against Uruguay but up until the 2nd goal they showed they were a match for them I felt. Spain Analysis:

I mean we generally know what to expect from Spain tactically. They’ll look to play a possession based game. However something to note is their defense and goalie really don’t look up to snuff.

It’s been weird watching them and seeing basic mistakes from guys like Ramos and Iniesta.

Their offense is fast though and that could cause problems for the Russians especially as the game goes on.

Russia Analysis:

I loved Russia over Uruguay and was very disappointed to see how it all unfolded. It started off even and open and Uruguay got that early goal off the free kick. Russia stayed in it though but the 2nd goal just killed them off and they couldn’t create the chances.

I was disappointed in that one as honestly I was hoping to see Spain vs Russia with a good bet on the Russians. Reason is that after the way they played their first two group games I thought this would be the perfect game for Russia. The way they harass possession based teams was beautiful – alas that last game shows that the quality of Saudi Arabia and Egypt was a large factor in that.

That Uruguay result for the Russians was a real downer for me. I was hoping the Russians would be a contender after their first two games.

I do wonder about Spains defensive issues though and I feel the odds are a little bit reactive on that Russian loss. Really up until the 2nd goal they were looking good and that just killed them off.
