June 16th is when the kickoff for Group G starts, and in North America it is probably the biggest day of the World Cup. We start off with Germany vs Portugal to start the day, and then later on that night at 6pm EST we have Ghana vs USA.
Much controversy surrounds the Americans and Klinsmann omitting Landon Donovan. This is a must-win game for the Americans too; it’s very unlikely they will be taking points off Germany or Portugal but you just never know. Really this is a must-win game for both teams if they want to qualify. If they lose this then they have to do something against BOTH Germany and portugal and that’s just not going to happen. So they need to get a win here – either team does.
Not even a draw is good enough here – both teams NEED to win, it’s that simple. Anything else is useless. So we could see a nice open attacking game with both teams battling for the victory, and that could be very entertaining. The first thing I am going to say it let’s stay away from betting on who will win.
This is a very tight game and both teams are evenly matched. I can honestly see it being 1-1 around the 70 minute mark, and both teams pushing up with one team scoring on what is basically a coinflip.
It’s so tight that with the USA starting quick, betting USA/DRAW or USA/Ghana in regard to half-time and full-time are options.
However we are going to stay away from betting the winner of Ghana vs USA.
Instead, we are recommending we bet Over 2.5 goals. USA are about 50% for that, while Ghana are at 75%. Therefore this is a very +EV bet at 6/4 odds.

This is where things get interesting.
We like USA to start quick, and get an early goal. With USA-Ghana at 33/1 odds that is very tempting. USA-Draw is tempting as well at 14-1.

So the possibility of it being USA winning the first half, and Ghana win the game are high with the USA scoring and starting early. 33/1 odds is a great price – I’d start actually thinking about it at 18/1 so it’s worth a small value bet. Generally for those I’d bet a 10th of a unit – so if you bet $100, you’d bet $10 on this one.
The next one we like is Both Teams to Score at 11/10. However we like it going Over 2.5 goals, so we’d like to combine that one.
